The Monitoring and Research team are looking for volunteers who can identify birds by sight and sound to help us record breeding birds at some of our key nature reserves.

Our breeding bird surveys use the transect method, by which a recorder walks a path of fixed length, taking a consistent length of time, recording all bird activity along it on a map of the transect route.

The survey season is between March and June each year. We ask surveyors to complete 6 survey visits during that time. The visits should be done in the early morning when birds are most likely to be singing.

These surveys require skill in bird identification. If you are not 100% confident in doing a survey on your own, there may be an opportunity to join an experienced surveyor for a few surveys to help build up your skills. 

This recording gives us valuable feedback on the status of habitats birds use for nesting and helps us detect changes brought about by our management.
