Nature Crafting

Be inspired...

Get creative and connect with nature. Nature-based crafting, whether using natural materials to create a masterpiece or using the natural world as the inspiration or focus of your work, is a fantastic way for many people to connect with nature.

Here we would like to showcase some crating ideas to start those creative juices flowing.

If you have a nature-based craft that you are passionate about and would be interesting in sharing some inspiring photographs and text we would love to hear from you!

Cardboard Models

Cheryl was inspired to create this beaver model by recycled cardboard sculptures she'd seen. "Since the Trust was working on a beaver project, I thought I’d give it a go! Using only recycled materials, I had a few trial-and-error moments, but I think you can tell it’s a beaver. There’s always room for improvement, but I’m happy with how it turned out. It was also a fun project I did with my daughter—she loved getting involved with the cardboard and helping bring the beaver to life. It's always nice to share creative projects like this with her!"

Embroidery

Danielle, Communities and Education officer at the Trust, spends some of her free time making lots of different types of nature crafts. Here you can see some amazing examples of nature-themed embroidery designs.

She says. "As a complete embroidery novice, I've found starting with kits really helpful. As my confidence has grown, I've been able to adapt and improvise my own versions of the designs and try a bit of freehand. It's a great way to step away from the smartphone and celebrate the nature I love so much. "

Nature Journaling

After joining WTBCN Community and Education Officer Becca on a Cambourne Nature and Natter event Caitlin was inspired to try her hand at scrapbooking / junk journaling and illustrated some of the things they spotted on their walk! Caitlin has been inspired to set herself the challenge of doing one of these pages every month!

March nature journal, with scetches, watercolour images and lists of sightings; dunnock, woodpecker, robin, great tits, blue tit and hawthorn, and things heard including chiff-chaff, woodpecker, great tit and blue tit.

Crochet

Amy received a crochet kit as a gift and it has become a new hobby of hers. "Although it look a little while to get the hang of the stitches, and even how to hold the crochet needle, crocheting has become one of my favourite crafting hobbies. I find a lot of satisfaction in watching the pieces come together, mainly into little animal toys or decorations. They also make great presents for others! This bat keyring was my first finished piece."
