Commitment:
Any DayFrequency:
MonthlyWe regularly run bat surveys on a number of our nature reserves to identify which bats are using them and investigate how changes on the reserves influence bat activity.
We have gathered a lot of information on some of our key reserves, but there are other reserves which we are interested in surveying where no-one available locally to lead them. This is where you could help! We are looking for a few volunteers with experience of bat surveying and identifying UK bats by their calls who would be happy to lead these surveys. Working with Wildlife Trust staff you would arrange dates for the surveys then coordinate and lead other volunteers during the surveys. We have bat detectors for these surveys, both heterodyne for listening in the field and recording for later sonogram analysis. You don't need to be a professional ecologist or major expert, but some knowledge and the ability to identify bats is required.
Experience required:
You will need to have experience of bat surveying and be able to identify bats from calls heard on a bat detector. Ideally you will be happy to lead a small team of volunteers on these surveys (survey teams are usually 3-4 people). We would consider solo surveys at some sites if you have a strong preference.
Commitment :
Three or four evenings of surveying between May and September. Ideally we would survey sites for at least three years to allow for natural variance. Exacts dates to be chosen as best suits you.
Be willing to follow our health and safety systems, and data protection procedures with regard to working with other volunteers.
