The Highland Cattle at BCN
Have you seen the Highland Cows on our Wildlife Trust BCN reserves?
Known as Bò Ghà idhealach in Scottish Gaelic and Heilan coo in Scots, these iconic and extremely photogenic creatures, with their distinctive horns and long, woolly, wavy coats, are hugely popular with visitors to our nature reserves. They are important and valued members of our Reserves Teams and the impact of their grazing is crucial in helping us achieve our conservation aims.
Some of the fantastic "fold"
Although a group of cattle is usually called a herd, a group of Highland cattle is known as a ‘fold.’

Adopt a Highland Cow
Highland cattle are hardy grazers – they will eat a wide range of vegetation unpalatable to most cattle – and can live outside in all seasons and weathers.
These iconic cattle are crucial in helping us achieve our conservation aims, clearing scrub and all manner of vegetation so that wildflowers can thrive. Adopt a highland today to help us provide for the livestock and carry out day-to-day management and health checks.
We have two adoption pack options available; a postal pack, and a digital version.
