Outreach in Bedford Borough

Ruth Sneath updates us on her outreach work in Bedford Borough

I (Ruth) am continuing to do outreach in Bedford Borough, a recent highlight has been delivering a wildlife mapping activity with a group at Great Denham Primary. We went on a short walk around the grounds looking for signs of wildlife in winter.

I was delighted to be shown around some of the wildlife features that the children had incorporated into their school grounds. We then looked at various natural history items to be inspired about what more could be done for wildlife in Great Denham. The children came up with some great ideas such as making wildlife crossing tunnels. Using natural materials the children then mapped out Great Denham and incorporated new ideas of how to link wildlife habitats and features.

We are continuing to offer free taster sessions to schools in Bedford Borough as part of our ongoing service development. Tasters range from assemblies, local habitat investigations, green woodwork, mapping and owl pellet dissection.

We are launching our Forest School competition for Bedford Borough Schools. We welcome schools to submit photos of them doing three things for nature with the chance to win a free 6 week Forest School programme delivered in their school grounds by a qualified member of Wildlife Trust staff.
