What an incredible time we had at Totternhoe in July. It all started as we gathered at 8.30pm on the reserve for hot drinks and biscuits. Cradling our drinks we were taken to a world of fabulous fibs and magical tales by local Story-teller Jane (www.wassledine.co.uk). We had to vote on our favourite story and we then let into the secret of how nighttime came to be as we waited for dusk to fall.
Totternhoe Nature Reserve is wonderful at any time of the day but there's something magical about being there after dark at our annual Creatures of the Night Event, says Sarah Cowling
Gwen and Chantelle then led the group around the reserve to detect bats and look for glow-worms. A delighted group returned to base having detected common pipistrelles feeding. We did spot a lone glow-worm who keep glowing bright so that we could all have a look at her.
The evening ended with a magnificent display from Totternhoe’s resident moths with identification for our county moth recorders. Amongst many others some elephant hawk moths, drinker moths and chalk carpet moths visited the traps. A big thank you to all who attended this event and all who helped me to run it - this is one of my favourite events of the year, Sarah.
