Career placement

Long-term volunteer placements ideal for those seeking a career in conservation.

Our Volunteer Officer (VO) placements are aimed at people looking for an in-depth introduction to working in conservation.

Placements are offered for up to a year in our Reserves and Wider Countryside Teams (an occasionally in other teams). VOs gain valuable experience and training in all aspects of the Trust’s work, and a high percentage of them have gone on to jobs in the conservation sector.

Applicants need to have an enthusiasm for nature conservation and wildlife and a desire to get involved in the environmental sector. Good team working and communication skills are essential, as well as a keenness to learn. It is helpful if applicants had a full driving licence and a basic level of computer literacy. Previous experience of volunteering in conservation is desirable but not essential.

My practical skills and confidence have grown immensely, putting me in a great position to pursue a career in practical conservation

Chantelle, a recent Volunteer Officer with the Cambridgeshire Reserves Team, had this to say about her experiences:

"Keen to kick-start a career in wildlife conservation I took up the post of trainee reserves officer at Grafham Water Nature Reserve. Supported by a experienced, professional and welcoming team, my practical skills and confidence have grown immensely.
But this placement has been more than just a lesson in wielding chainsaws and building bridges (although that part is pretty good fun), the placement has opened doors to a career conservation. I have gained experience with a number of great British species including the great crested newts, dormice and my personal favorite, bats.
Now I have gained paid employment doing something I love. Show enthusiasm, put in the effort, ask lots of questions, (ask a few more questions) and the Wildlife Trust can help make your passion a reality. And as if that's not enough, you'll make some pretty good friends along the way!"
